Officers with the New Orleans Police Department arrested seven people for illegal carrying of weapons at a second line parade in Uptown on Sunday.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick praised officers for their coverage along the route and for the use of drone surveillance.

"These arrests highlight our ongoing efforts to keep Second Lines safe," Chief Kirkpatrick said. "We will continue to be intentional in protecting our community while honoring the culture that makes New Orleans so special."

Following the shooting at the Nine Times second line parade in the Desire area earlier this month, local officials criticized the new state law that allows for carrying concealed firearms without a permit, saying it made officers' jobs harder in figuring out who can and cannot legally carry guns.

Charges listed against the people arrested at the New Orleans Lady Buckjumpers second line include carrying a firearm in a gun-free school zone, being a convicted felon in possession of a gun, and carrying a gun while also being in possession of illegal narcotics.

NOPD lists the arrested individuals and relevant charges as follows:

-Deandre' Smith (B/M, 8-31-00) - carrying a firearm while in a firearm free zone (school), illegal carrying of a weapon and neglect carrying of a concealed weapon.
-Antonio Marcelin (B/M, 11-25-94) - illegal carrying of a weapon, negligent carrying of a concealed weapon, illegal carrying of a weapon while in possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics and violation of a controlled dangerous substance in a school zone.
-Jaevail Lang (B/M, 8-3-06) - illegal carrying of a firearm, illegal carrying of a firearm while in a firearm free zone (school) and negligent carrying of a concealed weapon.
-Jared Johnson (B/M, 9-1-93) - illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, negligent carrying of a concealed weapon and possession of a stolen firearm.
-Jase Johnson ( B/M, 7-14-05) - negligent carrying of a firearm and statewide permits for concealed handguns during a parade or demonstration.
-Roger Ford (B/M, 10-25-04) -  negligent carrying of a firearm and statewide permits for concealed handguns during a parade or demonstration.
-Tahj Stores (B/M, 11-24-04) - statewide permits for concealed handguns during a parade or demonstration.

NOPD says its officers will be out in force at two more second line parades set for this weekend.
