The woman accused of crashing into a car during a high speed chase with police and killing two teenaged girls has surrendered to police.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, Joneaka Smooth turned herself in during the day on Thursday. She is facing two counts of manslaughter, one count of negligent injury, hit-and-run, and flight from an officer charges.


Smooth is accused or crashing a 2013 Mercedes into another vehicle after exiting off of Interstate 610 at St. Bernard Avenue Wednesday while trying to run from police. Smooth and two other women are accused of shoplifting at the Lakeside Shopping Center. That initial crime led Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputies to initiate a traffic stop, which led to the chase. According to JPSO officials, they called off that pursuit after it entered New Orleans. The deputies involved in the chase discovered the crash after they exited to turn around and return to Jefferson Parish.

According to WWL-TV, the 17-year-old victims who died in the crash were students at West Jefferson High School.

Smooth is the second suspect connected to the chase who has been arrested. A third suspect remains at large.
