New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed Thursday that meetings will be held soon on how a National Guard law enforcement deployment to the Crescent City would work.
"There will be a first meeting. It will occur this week with the National Guard, with the governor, to begin talks of an implementation," the chief told WWL's Newell Normand.
Kirkpatrick said she would happily accept the help.
"I expect there to be a partnership like we've always had," she said. "If we had choice, it probably would be not the first choice, however, if they're coming, let's be realistic about it and let's make it work. My number one issue was I did not want it to be a takeover. I don't want a takeover attitude."
Governor Jeff Landry has made a request to the Trump Administration that would allow the federal government to pick up the tab for mobilizing up to 1,000 members of the Louisiana National Guard to be deployed throughout the state. How many would be sent to New Orleans and what their duties would be here have not been made public.
Kirkpatrick said the troops would not be under her command but would be under their own chain of command, including the governor.
