Hours after President Donald Trump mentioned New Orleans as a city where he might deploy federalized National Guard soldiers to patrol the streets for crime, the city of New Orleans and NOPD issued a joint statement thanking the federal government for its help in past crime-fighting efforts.
"The City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) thank the federal government for their support, including the SEAR 1 grant for special events. We have consistently worked with our federal partners, including collaborations with the Louisiana State Police. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in our ongoing success in reducing crime," the statement reads.
The Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) 1 was declared by the Biden Administration after the Bourbon Street truck attack on New Year's Day. SEAR 1 afforded the city extra resources for public safety during Mardi Gras. Super Bowl LIX, which was played at the Superdome a little more than a month after the attack, also had a SEAR 1 designation.
The joint statement went on to praise the cooperation that helped keep those events largely free from any dangerous sort of disruption.
"New Orleans is an international city, welcoming visitors from all over the world every day of the year. Our federal and state partnerships have played a significant role in ensuring public safety, particularly during special events for a world-class city," it said.
