Hours after a four-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself with a gun his father left unattended, the New Orleans Police Department held an event to give away 300 gun safety locks for free.
"Last night we had a horrific tragedy," said Interim NOPD Superintendent Michelle Woodfork. "That shooting shouldn't have happened."
Police say Keith Jones Jr. found the loaded weapon under his dad's pillow, and shot himself through the eye. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police booked Keith Jones Sr. for negligent homicide. The police report also says the gun was reported stolen in St. Bernard Parish.
