The four-year-old who was fatally shot Thursday night in New Orleans East shot himself with a stolen gun that his father left unattended, WWL-TV reports.
According to the police report, Keith Jermal Jones Jr. had come into his father's bedroom asking for something to drink. The father left to get a drink for his son, and left the loaded weapon under his pillow, with the safety off.
The report says the boy found the gun and shot himself in the eye. Police were on the scene around 10:30 p.m. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital around 11.
The report also says the gun had been reported stolen from St. Bernard Parish.
Jones Sr. was booked on a charge of negligent homicide.
