A New Orleans police officer who died two-and-a-half years after being shot in the head in the French Quarter was laid to rest today.
Officer Trevor Abney was about to go on duty in October 2020 when a man passing by in a pedicab stood up and fired into Abney's police unit. A .40 caliber bullet struck Abney near his left eye.
Doctors left the bullet lodged in his head, determining that would be less risky than attempting to remove it. But it also meant the chance he could suffer a fatal stroke or other deadly medical event at any time.
Abney died of complications from that injury on April 9.
Police officers from across the region came to attend Abney's funeral, along with New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and members of the New Orleans City Council.
Abney joined the NOPD in 2015, after an Army National Guard career that included a deployment in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and to Iraq in 2011.
