The New Orleans Police Department says it is investigating a shooting involving a reserve police officer Tuesday night.
It happened about 9 p.m. in the 3800 block of St. Bernard Avenue in the Filmore neighborhood near City Park.
"An off-duty reserve office was working a detail in the area when he heard shots being fired," said New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson. "He confronted an individual who was in possession of a firearm."
Ferguson says the officer ordered the subject, a 29-year-old man, to drop the weapon. When he did not, the officer fired.
"The office fired his weapon, striking the individual in the head area, where he sustained a graze wound to the head," said Ferguson.
The injured man is in fair condition at a local hospital, and is responsive and talking, Ferguson said.
The chief said the reserve officer will be reassigned and cannot act as a police officer during investigation.
Although the officer was in full uniform working a detail, he was off duty, and therefore not wearing a body-worn camera, said Chief Ferguson.
