Getting a handle on overtime at the New Orleans Police Department may be easier said than done.
Dr. Skip Gallagher, a UNO professor and police watchdog, told WWL's Newell Normand that a big problem is that no one seems to be monitoring time sheets and making sure they match up.
"One of the things this state audit recently found is there is just not the proper accountability," Gallagher said.
And he said when officers are disciplined for payroll violations, the consequences are usually minor.
"An officer that was found in two years and ten months with 333 payroll violations, that officer was given a five-day suspension," he said, "for 33 payroll violations over just less than three years."
Gallagher said he found example after example of similar cases.
