NOPD releases video of Mid City officer-involved shooting

The New Orleans Police Department has released the video of an officer-involved shooting that happened following a domestic disturbance in Mid City in September.

The suspect in that shooting, Justin Martin, 28, is accused of failing to obey officers' commands to put down his gun when they responded to a call on at a home on Bienville Street on the night of September 8. That led to officers shooting Martin twice, who, according to the video, returned fire at the officers. An extra shot was fired from Martin's gun after he threw his gun off the porch and it hit the ground.

The video then shows one of the responding officers handcuffing Martin before rendering aid by compressing his abdominal wound with his bare hands. A second officer then applied a chest seal to that wound. That, NOPD officials said on Friday, saved Martin's life.

In a Friday news conference, NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the officers' response as "calm," "intentional," and "compassionate."

Martin is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault of an officer, resisting, and battery of a dating partner involving strangulation.
