The New Orleans Police Department released crime statistics Tuesday that show a decrease in most violent crime categories in 2023.

Through the end of last year, New Orleans logged 192 homicides -- 74 fewer than 2022, a drop of 28 percent from 2022. The department's data show homicides are down 16 percent compared to the city's three-year average.
According to the NOPD, there was also a decrease in non-fatal shooting incidents of 22 percent from 2022.
Carjackings were down 44 percent from 2022, but car thefts were up 62 percent.
Aggravated rape declined 33 percent for 2023, but reported simple rape rose 13 percent. That was the only violent crime category to show an increase.
