The NOPD today gives an update on its status, at the halfway point of the year.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell touted the year-to-date statistics compared to last year.

"Comparing 2023 to 2022, just again, continues to show us steady progress," said Cantrell. "Total crimes against persons are down 17 percent. Murders are down 19 percent. Armed robbery is down 22 percent."

Carjackings are also down, but statistics tracked by the New Orleans Metro Crime Commission show car theft is still a problem: more than 3,900 cars stolen so far in 2023. And compared to the last pre-pandemic year, 2023 has already surpassed the total homicides of 2019.

Still, the mayor says the NOPD's efforts show progress.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell says New Orleans' crime data show marked improvement:

"We are responding actively, engaging, and the New Orleans Police Department, the men and women are really doing the work, and it's showing," she said.
