Newell Normand dedicated a good portion of Monday's edition of the Newell Normand Show evaluating the job performance of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

Normand said he spent much of the weekend considering Mayor Cantrell’s mishandling of more than a dozen issues and topics including police manpower, waste disposal, water bills, and blight.

Normand said in assessing Cantrell’s current performance, he reflected on the early days when he became host of the show, almost five years ago.

Back then, Normand questioned the mayor on her handling of what many viewed as the number one issue in New Orleans: crime.

The mayor eventually refused to appear on the show because of the line of questioning, which Normand said was her right. Fast forward to the present, Normand said crime remains the number one issue for the city of New Orleans and in some regards the issue has deepened.

Normand said Cantrell’s failure to promptly take on the difficult task of crime reduction has put the New Orleans Police Department and the citizens of New Orleans in a dangerous situation.

“So, she’s had a total lack of attention until just recently to the crime problem and now she’s just trying to play catch up,” Normand said on Monday. “What does she do? She tries to play catch up by attacking a federal judge in the consent decree. Not a good strategy. A mishandling of that, that very well may have set the NOPD back months, could be a year, who knows? Because who knows what is next to come out the mouth of Mayor LaToya Cantrell?”

Outside of the words that have left the mayor’s mouth, some of her actions have raised eyebrows. Most recently, the mayor appeared during the sentencing of a juvenile defendant who was found guilty of carjacking several victims.

Mayor Cantrell sat on the side of the juvenile defendant. Normand could not make any sense of the mayor’s decision to sit in support of the defendant.

“You stand up when they’re doing the right things, not when they’re doing the wrong things. Each of the crime victims said they thought they were betrayed by the mayor. They were,” Normand said.

After considering the mayor’s performance since her first term, Normand concluded that a recall is the only remedy.
