A Galliano man is dead after state troopers say a drunk driver crashed into his car.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. Saturday on LA 308 near East 104th Street in Galliano.
According to investigators, Javier Raygosa-Nava tried to pass an SUV driven by Junior Benavidez-Mendoza in a no-passing zone. Troopers say during his attempt to pass Benavidez-Mendoza, Raygosa-Nava drove his truck off the road. Then, investigators say, Raygosa-Nava struck Benavidez-Mendoza’s SUV while trying to get back onto the road. That collision sent both vehicles off the road and to flip into the Bayou Lafourche.
Benavidez-Mendoza was taken to a hospital where he later died. Raygosa-Nava was not injured.
According to investigators, Raygosa-Nava’s blood alcohol test showed that his blood alcohol concentration was more than twice the legal limit. As a result, he was booked on vehicular homicide and first-offense DWI charges.
The case remains under investigation
