The New Orleans Fire Department says firefighters rescued one person from a one-alarm fire at the Bywater's abandoned Naval Support Activity facility.

NOFD got the call at about 11:36 a.m. Thursday morning at the long-abandoned building in the 4400 block of Dauphine Street.

When firefighters arrived the building was engulfed in flames. The fire department says rescuers used a ladder to save a man who was spotted on the third floor of the burning building.

They say the unidentified man fled the scene before he could be treated for smoke inhalation or be questioned about how the fire started.

The abandoned building is known for attracting vagrants and homeless people.

The fire began on the second floor and extended to the sixth floor. Firefighters quickly got the fire under control. It is unclear how the fire started.
