The North shore is going to the dogs this weekend with parades and gatherings by Krewe du Pooch at the Mandeville Lakefront at noon tomorrow and Mardi Paws at 2pm Sunday afternoon at the Covington Trailhead.

Both events feature dogs parading in costumed themes.

This year's costume theme for Krewe du Pooch is the "Great Gatsby."

Alia Casborne' is an organizer with the Krewe:  "Think the Roaring 20's, they generally dress the dogs up to be seen and parade the floats on the scene, and it's always a fun time."

Casborne' says the post parade extravaganza is a great gathering place for young and old.

"We have food trucks out, on stage we have live music, 'The Brass Hearts' is our band and we also have a DJ."

Sunday the Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws will gather for their parade and extravaganza at Covington Trailhead.  This year's theme is "Tails from the Barkside".

They kickoff their half mile parade at 2pm at Columbia and Kirkland Streets in Historic Downtown Covington.

Founder Denise Gutnisky talked about the purpose of Mardi Paws:

"We really did this to put smiles on the faces of the young and old.  There's nothing nicer than seeing people smiling ear-to-ear when they see dogs and costumes."

Gutnisky reflects on the founding of the Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws:  "When I started the parade 29-years-ago, it's the same group of people that do it, it's a handful of volunteers.  We've always had it benefit kids and canines."

Both organizations are nonprofits raising money and awareness.  Krewe du Pooch supports animal welfare causes and Mardi Paws supports the care agency Scott's Wish.
