Louisiana state police say a man was hit by a car and killed while walking on I-12 in Tangipahoa Parish early Monday morning.

Troopers tell us it happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. near Pumpkin Center Road, west of Hammond.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2019 Honda Accord was traveling westbound on Interstate 12 in the left lane," said Trooper Marc Gremillion.

At the same time, a pedestrian identified as 24-year-old Dentreal Mouton of Lafayette was walking in the same direction in the left lane of the highway.

"For reasons still under investigation, the Honda struck Mouton in the roadway," said Gremillion.

Mouton died at the scene. Troopers collected samples for toxicology testing from both Mouton and the driver, and the incident is under investigation.
