'Person of interest' in 2nd line shootings in custody

'Person of interest' in 2nd line shootings in custody
New Orleans Police Department

A man described as a "person of interest" in one of two shootings that happened during a second line parade Sunday is in custody on unrelated charges, New Orleans Police officials announced Tuesday morning.

"The charges have not been in relation to the shooting, but again, he is a person of interest," said NOPD Fifth District Captain Jennifer Dupree.

Dupree said they have executed multiple search warrants and seized four guns.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says that's just part of the progress they have made since the deadly violence over the weekend.

"We have received Crimestopper information. We continue to want to encourage this community to be partners with us," said the chief, pleading "please be partners with us."

The two shooting incidents happened less than an hour from each other as the Nine Times Social Aid and Pleasure Club second line winded through the neighborhood in the Desire and Florida areas, but police say the two shootings, which in total injured 13 people, killing two, are not related.

The chief said investigators are close to identifying suspects, and that is why she wants to hear more from witnesses.

"We are close to making arrests in the situation," said Kirkpatrick. "It really is just a matter of time, plus there were thousands of people out there. Someone saw this."

Police say anyone who has information should call NOPD Homicide at (504) 658-5300, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll free at (877) 903-7867 (STOP).
