Plaza Tower: Sell it and redevelop it or take it down—Cantrell

Plaza Tower: Sell it and redevelop it or take it down—Cantrell
WWL.com

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell took to the microphone this morning to address her plans for Plaza Tower.

As the Mayor was addressing the media, the New Orleans Fire Department was conducting an inspection of the long-abandoned building on Howard and Loyola.

Firefighters were also performing a sweep of homeless people who may be living in the building.

Cantrell initially announced there are people interested in buying the blighted eyesore:

“Going to a sale and being purchased doesn’t take away the existing conditions,” Cantrell said.  “However, when you do have two viable, strong alternatives meaning, the options come with the resources necessary to trigger a redevelopment.”

Cantrell would not say who was interested in the structure or how far along the negotiations were going but she says this likely the last, best chance for the beleaguered edifice.

“If it can be redeveloped, great.  I think it’s a great thing for the city of New Orleans.  However, if it cannot be…then I am on the side of demolition.”

We may have a final determination on the fate of Plaza Tower in the near future.
