A Kenner woman faces drug and cruelty charges when police say doctors determined her children were high on cocaine.

Police say they were notified on November 21 by Children's Hospital New Orleans that they were treating a four-year-old girl for a broken arm. According to police, the child's mother, 34-year-old Ashley Burguera said the girl injured herself when she was jumping on a bed and fell.

Police say a urine sample the hospital obtained from the girl tested positive for cocaine.

The state Department of Children and Family Services then requested a similar test of the girl's two-year-old brother. Police say this test was also positive for cocaine.

Burguera, accompanied by her attorney at the hospital, declined to answer detective's questions.

Kenner police then obtained a search warrant of Burguera's home. Police say they found numerous bags and bottle caps containing a white powdery residue that tested positive in field tests for cocaine.

Police say those bags of residue were in areas easily reached by children.

Cops arrested her on charges of illegal use of controlled dangerous substances in the presence of person under 17, degree cruelty to juveniles, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
