A driver plunged a car into the water off the I-10 near Garyville. Deputies jumped into the water to save the four people in the vehicle.
"The crash occurred around 1 a.m. on Interstate 10 at Mile Marker 201," SJSO posted. "When officers arrived on scene, they observed a vehicle that was almost fully submerged in the water."
Officials say cops pulled off their bullet proof vests and went into rescue mode.
"Three SJSO officers went into the water and used a tool to break a window to reach the four people trapped inside the vehicle."
It happened Monday.
"This video shows the moment the submerged vehicle was located and SJSO officers remove their vests to enter the water. This video does not show the actual rescue because the officers’ body cameras are on the ground. The officers removed their vests which contains body camera prior to entering the water."
Sheriff Mike Tregre says the deputies were nearby for another crash.
“They went, got in the water and started pounding on the glass; and then we eventually had a glass break tool, and we were able to get the two children and two adults out of the vehicle,” Tregre explained.
The Sheriff praised the responding deputies.
"I was very proud of my officers."
He says the individuals were safely pulled to dry land, and they received medical care.
