New Orleans Police say a retired police officer committed suicide Thursday morning at the downtown office building that houses NOPD command headquarters.

Police say the incident happened in the lobby at 1615 Poydras St. at the DXC Technology building.

Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick issued a public plea to anyone who is feeling suicidal to seek help.

"Police work brings with it at times heavy burden and private hurt," she said. "I encourage anyone who is struggling, whether current or retired, to reach out. There is courage in reaching our. For anyone who has a burden on their heart, you do not have to be alone."

The national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached by dialing 988.
