A child is dead after Ponchatoula police say he got inside an unlocked car during Friday's sweltering heat.
According to a post on the Ponchatoula Police Department’s social media pages, the incident happened at a home “in the area of Methvin Lane.”
Detectives say they believe the child, Jahcari James, 3, walked out of his family’s home and got into the unlocked car.
Once Jahcari’s relatives realized he was missing, they asked neighbors to help them find him. A few minutes later, someone found Jahcari unconscious in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
Relatives tried to revive Jahcari while awaiting an ambulance’s arrival. Those efforts failed. EMS crews took Jahcari to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The child’s death remains under investigation.
