Low pressure off the southeastern U.S. coast now has a 40 percent chance of tropical development over the next week, the National Hurricane Center says.
NHC forecaster Jack Beven says the system's short-term prospects of development are much lower.
"Environmental conditions appear only marginally conducive for some slow development," said Beven, "but a tropical or subtropical depression could form in this region over the weekend or early next week while the system drifts northward or northeastward."
If development happens, it could be anywhere from off Apalachicola, Florida, to the outer banks of North Carolina.
