Power Boulevard: The upgrade that never was
WWL

Seven years ago the city of Kenner received $3-million to renovate and upgrade Power Boulevard between Esplanade and Vintage with new landscaping, lighting, sidewalks, everything a major thoroughfare would need.

The problem is after securing the money, the project went into hibernation.

“It was never moved on,” says Mayor Michael Glaser.  “No one knows why?”

After taking office in July, Glaser initiated a top-to-bottom examination of city government and discovered the dormant project.  Now, his office has taken the steps to get the project back on schedule and headed for implementation.

“This just proves to me that the new administration, the new council is getting rid of the cobwebs, and we’re actually making things happen,” Kenner City Council member Joey LaHatte told the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate.

The reconstituted project includes widening median walking paths from 6-to-12 feet.  The construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Number 1 Canal in Kenner.  Replacing felled trees from Hurricane Ida and new water fountains, lighting and benches for walkers.

The City of Kenner will come up with 20% of the cost while the federal government will pick up the remaining 80%.  “I don’t know why this wasn’t done five years ago, four years ago, three years ago, but we’re doing it now,” said LaHatte.
