Gasoline prices have begun an upward climb, but how high will they go?

AAA says the cost of an average gallon of regular gas increased three cents today and eight cents in the past week in New Orleans.

"For Louisiana by the time we get into May and into June, we're probably going to be looking at $2.85 a gallon," said AAA fuel prices analyst Don Redman.

That compares favorably to the $3.20 a gallon average from Memorial Day 2024.

"It's been a very modest increase and no doubt, that if we keep these prices down and potentially even further down, it's a big boon to the family budget," Redman said, although he warned the trade situation with Canada, which pipes a lot of oil and gas for use on the east coast of the U.S., adds some unpredictability.

"If the east coast starts struggling getting some petroleum from Canada, they can easily get gasoline from the Gulf coast," said Redman, meaning it would cut into supply and send prices up.

AAA says the current average cost of a gallon of regular in the New Orleans area is currently $2.84.
