A new bill proposed in the Louisiana state legislature is seeking to arm teachers.
HB21, filed by Rep. Lauren Ventrella, seeks to allow “for the carrying of a concealed weapon in a school or on a school campus by a certified teacher or school administrator who is employed by a school district and possesses a valid concealed handgun permit.”
The bill is the latest attempt to put firearms in the hands of teachers and other school officials, following the June 2022 failure of HB37, which originally focused on permitless carry but was revised to put more of a focus on school safety before failing to reach the final voting process.
While the bill lists the possession of a valid concealed carry permit as a requirement for teachers to bring firearms into a school, a separate proposed bill is seeking to do away with requiring concealed carry permits altogether.
An average of 12 children are killed by gun violence every day in America, according to The Sandy Hook Promise, and gun violence remains the leading cause of death among teens.
