US Senator Bill Cassidy is expected to face a tough reelection bid after President Donald Trump endorsed Congresswoman Julia Letlow to replace him.
However, as of the end of the second day of qualifying neither Cassidy nor Letlow had qualified to run.
Both are expected to sign up to be on the ballot today.
Cassidy is the state's senior senator, a Republican serving since 2015. During President Trump's first term, Cassidy voted to convict the president during the impeachment proceedings.
That's a fact that President Trump apparently has not forgot. He announced his support for Letlow before she even announced she would run against Cassidy. Since then, she jumped into the race and polls have shown she is on the lead.
Letlow is also expected to qualify today.
Meanwhile, the incumbents have already qualified in the House races for the other seats (other than the one Letlow is vacating).
Notes from two days of qualifying:
-House Majority Leader, Republican Steve Scalise has one Republican and one Democrat vying to replace him.
-No one other than incumbent, Democrat Troy Carter had signed up in the 2nd District.
-Incumbent, Republican Clay Higgens had no Republican challengers in the 3rd District.
-House Speaker, Republican Mike Johnson has two Republican challengers with little money and name recognition in the 4th District.
-Ten candidates signed up in the first two days to replace Letlow in the 5th District.
-Democrat Cleo Fields has three Black, Republican challengers vying to face him in the general election in the 6th District.
