Assistant District Attorney Emily Maw is under fire after refusing charges against 12 defendants arrested for violating gun laws in New Orleans.
In a surprising reversal of direction, Maw, the Chief Civil Rights Division Attorney for the DA’s office, had pressed charges against a number of defendants for the same infractions just a day earlier.
Her refusal of charges just the next day has been called a breach of policy by her boss, District Attorney Jason Williams.
Maw reportedly refused 12-misdemeanor charges against arrestees and at least two felony charges, resulting in the release of men.
But she did accept felony gun charges against six other defendants.
Among those who got a pass for giving up their firearms, was LSU Football star Malik Nabers.
Strangely, Maw also refused charges against a man who was arrested for carrying a pistol that had been converted into a machine gun.
The decision to refuse charges continues to remain a mystery.
Meanwhile analysts continue to monitor the fallout coming from Maw’s actions in court.
“That timing is, in Orleans Parish, premature at best,” Former state and federal prosecutor Matt Coman, told the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate. “And for that to happen en masse is unheard of.”
