If you have not obtained your REAL ID, the final deadline is fast approaching. By May 7th, 2025 you'll need to have made the switch.
The deadline has been extended several times since COVID, but this is the last one.
Dan Casey, Commissioner of the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, told WWL's Newell Normand citizens should not wait for word of another extension and need to prepare ahead of any travel plans after the May 7th deadline.
"If you don't have the REAL ID, you would be delayed as TSA will conduct further investigation to prove who you really are."
Some may think this only effects air travel, but after May 7th, there are several places that you may frequent or different ways that you travel that will require the REAL ID.
"Federal buildings, including the court there in New Orleans will require the REAL ID after May 7th. Also, travel by rail and cruise ship."
To beat the deadline, Commissioner Casey says you can visit the Louisiana Motor Vehicles website where you can check the status of you license and clear up any issues, then make an appointment for the REAL ID. A list of acceptable documents is listed on the website as well at omv.la.gov
