Flames erupted at the Valero refinery in Meraux Saturday causing what neighbors describes as a ground shaking blast.
Two refinery employees and six contract workers were rushed to the hospital.
No word on the condition of the injured people.
Valero said in a statement that the blaze broke out shortly after 5:00pm.
"Our primary concern is for the injured workers and safety of the surrounding community. As a precaution, to assure the safety and health of the community, air monitoring is underway."
East St. Bernard Highway was shut down in the area, but reopened late Saturday night.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
