Mayor LaToya Cantrell showed up for work at City Hall today and will continue to do her job despite Friday's federal indictment against her.
Our partners at NOLA.com report that Cantrell led a regularly scheduled public safety meeting with city officials at the municipal building. That meeting came three days after a federal grand jury handed up charges that the mayor committed wire fraud and other crimes to conceal her relationships with her NOPD bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, and used more than $70,000 in city funds to take trips with him under the guise they were conducting official city business.
A Cantrell spokesperson told the newspaper that Cantrell will continue to perform her duties despite the indictment. However on Saturday, she no-showed the ceremonial grand opening of Amtrak's rail service from New Orleans to Mobile.
