A $1 billion shortfall: that's what New Orleans city officials say they're facing when it comes to repairing the city's crumbling roads.
According to our partners at NOLA.com, the city's deputy chief administrative officer, Joe Threat, says the project is one of Mayor LaToya Cantrell's priorities. However, Threat said that road repairs have faced delays and cost problems since 2018. Among them, Threat said, is the rising cost of labor and materials. That, according to Threat, has led to construction firms giving the city higher estimates for the repairs.
The report says the city will petition FEMA for an extension to use the money the federal agency granted the city to either 2027 or 2028. Right now, the city has a deadline of 2025 to spend that money.
