Report: NOPD fires cop for shooting man in leg

NOPD

The New Orleans Police Department fired an officer for inadvertently shooting a man in his leg during a scuffle in New Orleans East earlier this year, The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports.

The department says Isaiah Shannon violated procedure when he got into a scuffle with the man, who was sitting in a car parked in the 4300-block of Werner Drive on March 10. Shannon and Officer Markus Caldwell investigated it as a suspicious vehicle, which ended up in an altercation when the man tried to flee after officers got him out of the car.

When NOPD released Officer Shannon's body-worn camera footage of the incident days later, Superintendent Shaun Ferguson noted that Shannon may have violated department rules.

"During the struggle, Officer Shannon did in fact have his weapon in his hand at the time of this struggle," said Ferguson, who said that violates policy.

This is not the first time Shannon has been in trouble for firing his gun. The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports Shannon was fired in 2013 for an incident, but had his employment reinstated by the New Orleans Civil Service Commission.

Shannon's lawyer says they will appeal this firing to the civil service commission as well.
