Representative Bagley will take another crack at doing away with brake tags

Sick of having to get your brake tag? The hassle of it is enough to drive one mad. It seems there is some inconsistency in it as well. Some people get a sticker with heavily tinted windows, while others may have a pin-sized crack in their windshield and be denied.

Representative Larry Bagley says enough is enough and the state should do away with the requirement all together. His bill did not pass this legislative session; however, he isn’t giving up.

“I’ll probably reintroduce it next year during the fiscal session.”

That is because while the bill is appealing to most, the revenue from the brake tags adds about ten million dollars to the state police budget and Bagley says he’ll have to come up with a replacement of the funds.

“As a legislator and author of a bill, you usually have to provide the funds for something like that.”

And he believes he can. As part of the revamp of the bill, he will propose a nominal fee to recover the costs.

“I can see adding ten dollars to the car registration fees.”

All in all, Bagley believes that enough people want this passed that it is worth tweaking the bill and trying again. He says he’s even in talks with the state police.

“They want to get rid of them too.”
