Several Jazz Fest performers had so much fun on stage at the Fairgrounds that they decided to give encore performances at an iconic French Quarter venue.
On Thursday night, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood made a special appearance at Preservation Hall during Irma Thomas’s performance there. Wood joined Thomas on stage to perform “Time Is on My Side,” a song first recorded by Thomas and covered by the Stones after they heard Thomas’s version.
“At midnight after the show, I popped to (Preservation Hall) to see the Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas, then jumped up to play ‘Time Is on My Side’ with her and her amazing band! #StonesJazzFest” Wood wrote on his Twitter page. In an earlier tweet, Wood wrote, “Thank you NOLA (Jazz Fest) for a fantastic show and the warm welcome!”
On Friday night, two more rock stars stopped by 726 St.
Peter Street.
Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters was spotted at Preservation Hall just hours after he and his band performed at Jazz Fest. Hozier took the Preservation Hall stage to sing his hit “Take Me to Church.”
Those appearances are part of Preservation Hall’s annual Jazz Fest Preserves events, featuring surprise musical guests performing with Preservation Hall’s band. Proceeds from the sold-out event benefit the Preservation Hall Foundation and its mission “to protect, preserve and perpetuate the musical traditions of New Orleans, through education, archives, musician support and community engagement.”
