The New Orleans Fire Department officially gets a permanent fire chief.

Roman Nelson assumed the role of Interim Superintendent after Tim McConnell resigned in October.

On Friday, New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell announced Nelson will be the New Orleans Fire Departments Superintendent.

Superintendent Nelson started his firefighting career with the New Orleans Fire Department in 1997.

He served as the departments Public Information Officer up to 2013 where he then served as second in command to now retired Tim McConnell.

Nelson has also served as NOFD Deputy Superintended since March of 2019.

“He has served as incident commander and commanded staff on numerous incidents, special events and unusual emergencies,” said Mayor Cantrell.

“Thank you to the community and the fire service mentors who made me who I am today,” said Superintendent Nelson. “The New Orleans Fire Department like the rest of the city has had some tough times in 2020 and we are dealing with tough times now in 2021, but we know that the city and this fire department can and will bounce back. We know because we have done it before.”

“To the members of the fire department I ask that you keep the fate. Keep your hearts and minds open as we work together to make this department stronger than ever, together,” said Superintendent Nelson.
