The Savannah Bananas are coming to New Orleans this weekend for two games, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, bringing baseball to the Superdome for the first time since 2004.

Superdome renovations in 2010 eliminated the dome's ability to convert to into a baseball venue, but Superdome officials say they've found a way to make these games happen.

"We went to a more football lower bowl situation," Superdome spokesman Mike Hoss said of those renovations, noting that the baseball field fits fine within the bowl. "The configuration, meaning where is home plate, the pitcher's mound, (and) that kind of stuff, is the same as it was when we had baseball."

Hoss says the current Superdome confines created some interesting outfield dimensions.

"The left field porch is short. You might see some home runs to left. If you hit one to straightaway center or to right field, you've hit a poke," Hoss said.

Could this lead to the Superdome hosting high school, college, or Major League Baseball in the future? Hoss says that's unknown.

"This is exhibition baseball, so it works. Would it work for anything else? I don't know," Hoss said. "I just don't know logistically if those (field dimensions) work (for other forms of baseball)."
