Sen. Bill Cassidy joined WWL's Newell Normand's show, where he said the closed primary for 28 elected officials is going to cost $135 million over the next 10 years.

And it bugs him.

"We don't have enough money and we're going to spend $135 million on elections?" Cassidy asked, adding that he would rather spend the money on things that attract and retain young people, like bike paths and outdoor space.

As a conservative, he said, "I'm not getting it."

Gov. Jeff Landry is pushing lawmakers to support closed primaries process, which basically means only registered Democratic and Republican voters might participate.

Landry says it's the preferred method of voting in southern states. But Cassidy would rather spend the state's money elsewhere.

He added that his goals are more jobs and more young people choosing Louisiana as their home. Programs like investing in the infrastructure of Port Louisiana, which is 'helping our state become a better place," he said.
