Sheriff: Passenger grabbed AK-47 before deputy shot him

Sheriff: Passenger reached for AK-47 when deputy shot him
St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre this afternoon released more details about a deputy shooting a motorist.

Sheriff Tregre today revealed one of the men in the car deputies found off of highway 51 near LaPlace and in the water was armed.

"Jacoby Williams is seated as a front-seat passenger in that vehicle," said Tregre. "There is an assault weapon on his lap, an AK-47."

Sheriff Tregre says Williams put his hands up -- at first -- but when a deputy tried to restrain Williams' arms, "Jacoby Williams resisted and snatched away from the grab of the officer, and grabbed the AK-47."

Tregre says his deputy, fearing for the safety of himself and others on the scene, made the decision to shoot Williams.

The deputy remains on administrative leave, and Louisiana State Police continues to investigate. State police today said they have obtained an arrest warrant for Williams, and will process it once Williams gets out of the hospital.
