At least two people are dead after the massive pileup that has Interstate 55 shut down until further notice.
According to St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre, that pileup is the result of approximately 25 separate crashes on both the northbound and southbound lanes. Those crashes and the resulting chain reaction and pileup were partly caused by the heavy fog that settled over the interstate early Monday morning.
"We do have two confirmed fatalities, and there are possibly two more," Tregre said.
Louisiana State Police spokesperson Kate Stegall says St. John Parish sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement agents are working to clear that wreckage. Until the highway is cleared, I-55 will be closed from the Interstate 10 interchange to near Manchac. Stegall says drivers should expect I-55 to be closed for "an extended period of time."

Foggy conditions on the Bonnet Carré Spillway have forced state police to closed that section of Interstate 10. Traffic headed from Kenner towards the Bonnet Carré Spillway is being rerouted to Interstate 310. Drivers who want to go west towards Baton Rouge will need to take US 61 (Airline Highway), while drivers who want to go towards Lafayette will need to take US 90. Traffic coming into Kenner on I-310 is being directed to I-10 East. Drivers who want to go west will need to exit near the airport and take Airline Drive.
Stegall says the spillway will also be closed for an "extended period."
