Shootings surge even more to start 2023

New Orleans averaged almost two shootings per day in 2022. The Metro Crime Commission says fatal and nonfatal shooting incidents totaled at least 704 for last year.

The numbers are even worse for the first few days of 2023.


There have been shootings every day so far in the new year. It started just four hours into 2023, and has not let up.

Ten people where shot in New Orleans just yesterday.

A shooting in Central City last night had five victims.

"Members of the New Orleans Police Department’s Homicide Section are investigating a Homicide that left a 50-year old man dead and a 53-year-old man dead.  A 30-year-old man, a 47-year-old female and an unknown female were injured," NOPD released.

That was around 8:00pm at the intersection of St. Andrew Street and Rev. John Raphael Jr. Way.

Another man was shot just before 9:00pm in the 7900 block of Chef Menteur Highway.

Earlier in the day, two people were shot at Tupelo Street and North Robertson Street in the Lower Ninth Ward just after noon.

"Initial reports indicate two victims suffered gunshot wounds and a suspect was apprehended after a foot chase."

A shooting just after 4:30am also sent a man to the hospital.

"The NOPD is investigating a shooting at the intersection of Louisiana and South Claiborne avenues. Initial information shows a male gunshot wound victim discovered at the location."

He was reportedly shot during an armed robbery.

A couple of hours earlier a teen was shot dead.

"The NOPD is investigating a homicide incident where, at about 2:20 a.m., a teenage juvenile male gunshot wound victim was reported to have been dropped off at a local hospital via private conveyance. The vehicle then fled the location. The victim was later pronounced deceased."
