A suspected armed robber exchanged gunfire with NOPD officers Tuesday night.
The officer-involved shooting happened at about 8:00 p.m. as police were investigating an armed robbery at the corner of N. Rocheblave and St. Louis Street.
According to an NOPD report, “At around 8 p.m., NOPD First District officers responded to a call of armed robbery in the 400 block of North Dorgenois Street. As officers began canvassing the area, an officer exchanged gunfire with an unknown adult male in the 2500 block of Saint Louis Street. During the incident, the subject sustained three gunshot wounds to the leg and was transported to the hospital for treatment by NOEMS, where his injuries are considered non-life threatening.”
As WWLTV reports, police used the suspect’s cell phone to track him. When officers called his phone, it rang while the suspect was hiding behind a bush.
The officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect who was shot three times in the leg during the shootout.
Police say the officer involved in this incident has served with NOPD for over three years and was not injured. As per NOPD procedure, the officer will be placed on administrative reassignment pending the investigation.
