NOPD is investigating a single vehicle traffic fatality that occurred early this morning on General DeGaulle Drive near River Oaks Street.
At around 1:47 a.m., NOPD Fourth District officers responded to a call of a vehicle accident at the location. Upon arrival, they discovered two victims.
The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female passenger was transported to the hospital in critical condition by NOEMS.
The initial investigation indicates the driver, travelling in a Dodge Challenger, was heading northbound on General DeGaulle at a high rate of speed when for unknown reasons she loss control of the vehicle.
The vehicle, initially travelling in the right lane, crossed over the left lane before toppling over a raised concrete median at the intersection of General DeGaulle and River Oaks.
Then, the vehicle crossed the grassy elevated median and subsequently struck a tree, which caused the car to spin before coming to a stop.
