New Orleans mayor-elect Helena Moreno on Friday outlined her immediate goals once she takes office Monday.

"There's six top priorities that I'll be following in the first 100 days that I've tasked my deputy mayors to be the ones to initiate and implement," she said.

Number one, Moreno said, is to increase productivity around basic municipal services.

"Our lights, our street maintenance, making sure that our infrastructure projects are moving along at a much faster pace," she said.

Second, said Moreno, is to revamp the Department of Safety & Permits to make it easier for businesses to navigate city requirements, "getting the word out there that the city of New Orleans is open for business."

The third item she listed was health and public safety.

"These two things go together; they're very much interconnected," Moreno said. "That means a real increased focus on youth and families, enhanced coordination among agencies, and also a real focus on well-being across all neighborhoods."

Fourth, said the mayor-elect, is enhancing the productivity and management of city departments.

Fifth, she listed what for many is the elephant in the room: "Ensuring that we get a real handle on the financial crisis that we're in, and that we quickly start identifying solutions to get us out of it as quickly as possible."

The final item for Moreno, a former investigative journalist, is to make the mayor's office more publicly transparent.

"I really do want to have this 'new day' where the public is hearing a lot more from their mayor, where the media is hearing a lot more from the mayor, so that the people of New Orleans truly understand what is happening with their city government," she said.
