A Salmen High School Student is facing guns charges after he allegedly livestreamed video of himself inside the school with a pistol.

According to a Slidell Police Department spokesperson, an Alexandria Police Department detective alerted Slidell officers to the video, which was streamed on Instagram, just after noon on Monday. The Alexandria officer told Slidell officers what the student allegedly did in the video and gave them a description of the student.

Minutes later, a school resource officer, patrol officers, and detectives arrived at the school, placed it on lockdown, and arrested the student. According to the SPD spokesperson, investigators found a loaded nine-millimeter Smith and Wesson pistol in the student's backpack.

“This was an exceptional effort by the Alexandria Police detective, our officers and our dispatchers," Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal said in a statement. "Within minutes, this threat was eliminated and the student was quickly taken into custody. The speed of response, and collaboration among all involved, was truly impressive. The safety of our students will always be a top priority.”

The student, identified only as a 17-year-old, was booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on illegal possession of a weapon by a juvenile and possession of a firearm on school property charges.

Police are still investigating why the student brought the gun to the school.
