Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann is stepping down in St. Bernard Parish.
"In most cases when a politician leaves midterm, it means one of three things: He's either sick, he's involved in a scandal, or he is about to be indicted. I can tell all of you guys, it is none of the above," Pohlmann announced today. "I just thought I was in the perfect time in the life."
The sheriff says he wants to leave on top.
"I finally made a decision to retire."
Pohlman has been sheriff since 2012.
His retirment starts November first.
He is 62-years-old and has been with the sheriff's office for 43 years, starting at the entry level and working his way up to sheriff.
Pohlmann named his chief deputy, Richard Baumy as interim sheriff.
Baumy says he will not run for the full time job.
