The St. Tammany Parish Council is set to take up a proposed "density moratorium" in tonight's meeting.
The idea is to put a six month hold on new, high-density residential development. St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper says new subdivisions are going up too fast.
"We've been experiencing high growth and the infrastructure is not keeping up with that," said Cooper. "We have demands on our utilities, our water and sewage utilities with capacities and collection lines, and distribution lines for water."
The moratorium would limit new residential development to no more than one house per acre, and would not effect any development underway, nor would it affect commercial development.
Opponents worry holding off on new home construction would drive sky-high property values even higher.
The council is set to debate the proposal at tonight's meeting. It starts at 6 p.m.
