Some good news for those of you looking to hold a crawfish boil either for Mardi Gras or for the first Friday of Lent. In fact, Louisiana's agriculture commissioner says the prices for crawfish and the crustaceans' sizes are just right.

"I can tell you: there are some good bargains out there," Ag Commission Mike Strain said. "We're going to have plenty of nice crawfish. Everyone needs to get theirs and enjoy them."

Strain says with Mardi Gras and Lent coming up, crawfish farmers will do well selling their catches compared to last year. Strain says the warming weather across the state is conducive to crawfish growing in both size and in population

"It's a big time for our crawfish farmers," Strain said. "They're really nice. We're very fortunate. You can get some really nice crawfish at $3.19 to $4 per pound."

According to Strain, this winter's hard freezes and snowfall had no impact on this year's crawfish crop.

"That just slows them down a little bit. That's all," Strain said. "It wasn't cold enough to kill the crawfish, so that is great. It was the drought that caused us to lose the crawfish not only in the ponds, but we also lost 100,000 acres plus of production in the (Atchafalaya) Basin."

Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says he's seen prices for live crawfish as low as $3.19 per pound.

Strain says the abundance of good-sized crawfish is good not just for seafood lovers but also for the state.

"That really supports our Louisiana economy," Strain said.
