As families across New Orleans settle into the summer break, the New Orleans Family Justice Center is seeing a troubling seasonal trend: a rise in domestic and family violence calls.
Mary Claire Landry, director of the Family Justice Center, says the summer months consistently bring added stressors that can strain household dynamics, especially in homes already dealing with instability.
“We typically see an increase in domestic violence and family conflict during the summer,” Landry said. “Children are home from school, routines are disrupted, and many families are struggling financially."
Landry says the biggest tasks for the center this time of year include helping families plan ahead, especially when it comes to childcare, work schedule changes, and the potential for violence to escalate.
“We’re working closely with families to make sure children and teens have safe, constructive places to go during the day," Landry said. “We also help caregivers make safety plans, not just for conflict at home, but in the event of a hurricane or unexpected emergency.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or family violence, the New Orleans Family Justice Center’s hotline is available 24/7 at (504) 866-9554.
